How To Install Water Filters In Your Kitchen

Water collects impurities as it moves from the catchment area through pipes to our homes. Installing water filters is not difficult and will give you clean, clear water for drinking and cooking.

There are different types of units you can buy, but they all use cartridges to filter contaminants from your water. The cartridge you need will depend on the level and type of contaminant present in your local water. Be sure to read the information carefully so you select the right type.

Look under your sink to find the best place to locate the apparatus. You will want to make sure it is out of the way so you can access pipes when necessary. But, as you will need to change the cartridges it must be accessible too. Hold the unit in place and using a pencil mark the spots where the screws will go.

You don’t need to be a tradesman to have the tools to do this job but you do need a couple of tools. A drill and a screwdriver are required to securely mount the filtration unit. An adjustable wrench is needed to undo and tighten the plumbing fittings when connecting the filter unit to the water supply.

Drill the holes in the wall where you have marked it using the correct size drill bit for the screws. Different models of filtration systems will have different numbers of screws to attach them but they will all provide the screws needed. Hold the unit in place and attach the screws to the wall. Check that it is mounted solidly.

Look under your sink for a cut off lever. This will turn off the flow of water in the area you are going to work. If there isn’t one you will have to turn it off at the meter. Turn the water off and turn the faucet on. Water in the pipes between the cutoff point and your faucet will drain out.

When the water is turned off and the lines drained disconnect the flexible hose that connects to the PVC pipe under your sink. There may be some water still left in the line so place a hand towel underneath to soak up any spills. Attach the hose to the filtration unit and then attach the flexible hose that comes with it to the PVC pipe.

Water will flow from the source through the filter unit into your kitchen supply. Check that all the fittings have been tightened properly. It is now time to turn the water supply back on and check for any leaks. When you turn the faucet on, the water that flows will be discolored for a few moments and then will run clear.

Your family will love the clean, fresh water that flows from your kitchen tap. To keep it this way be sure to change the filter cartridges according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Installing water filters is a quick and easy task that anyone can do.
