Keep Away From Foods That Are Actually Filled With Hidden Fats
Eating right and maintaining a healthy weight isn’t always easy. Temptation is everywhere. Even the foods that seem healthy and right for someone on a diet may contain hidden fats that can make you gain weight.
Let me explain. For years nutritionists have been telling us that foods like fish are beneficial to our health. This is because fish contains omega-3 fatty acids.
Knowing that fish is good for us, we might then conclude that if we eat sushi we are staying on track. This can be true, but not always. Sushi is a delicious meal but some versions contain hidden fat and calories. I’m referring to popular sushi rolls that include ingredients like cream cheese or mayonnaise.
Some sushi includes fattening fish that has been battered and friend. So, you can’t just order any sushi on the menu and be sure that it’s good for you. Read their ingredients and ask how they are prepared. To be safe, order basic sushi rolls, like salmon, tuna or crabmeat.
Another example is dried fruit. Fresh fruit is good for us, so dried fruit must be too, right? Not really. All the water has been removed from dried fruit so it is denser than fresh fruit and has more calories per piece. Some manufacturers actually add sugar to dried fruit making it even more caloric. If you’re going to eat fruit, make it fresh. It’s the healthiest.
Now let’s talk about granola. This is one health food store staple, that often promotes it’s self as good for you. Granola can be healthy, but the products found in stores usually aren’t. This is because some prepackaged granola contains added sugar. Your best bet is to make your own with oatmeal, fruit and some honey if you like it a little sweet.
Here’s one food that goes out of its way to fool you into thinking it’s healthy – the veggie burger. This family favorite can sometimes be full of hidden fats and salt.
Sure, veggie burgers don’t contain the fat and cholesterol of meat burgers but they have other issues. Many veggie burgers include fattening cheese and dressing that holds the patty together. These add many unwanted calories. Knowing this, it’s a good idea to only eat veggie burgers occasionally.
If you want to stay fit and healthy it’s important to know what you’re eating. To make the smartest choices don’t assume a food is healthy because it appears that way. Read labels. Ask questions. That way you will know you are making the best choices for you.
